Biography
Afrikän Protoköl is the Afro-groove sextet of Belgian saxophonist Guillaume Van Parys. After meeting Burkinabe drummer Moïse Ouattara, he composed music based on traditional rhythms from Burkina Faso and West Africa. Jazz riffs, groove and improvisation blend to create a warm and festive transcontinental fusion. Established in Burkina Faso in 2013, the group presented its debut album Freedom From The Known in 2014 and 2015 in Africa and Europe, well received by the press, general public and professionals. The project was awarded the Prix du Jury SIMA 2014 at the Salon International de la Musique Africaine in Dakar in November 2014 and was nominated for the Octaves de la Musique 2015 in Belgium.
In 2017, the band presented their second album Beyond The Grid which was also warmly received. In 2018, the band released its first music video for the song Kélé Magni. It was again nominated for the 2018 Octaves de la Musique and was Laureate of the 2018 Sabam Awards in the World Music category.
Although clear influences from Afro Beat father Fela Kuti, Steve Coleman, Manu Dibango and Aka Moon can be heard in the compositions, a highly original identity emerges from this blend of emerging jazz musicians from Africa and Europe. With a rhythm section from Burkina Faso and horns from Belgium, Afrikän Protoköl offer a colorful, dynamic show of original, universal music.

Afrikän Protoköl est le sextet afro groove du saxophoniste belge Guillaume Van Parys. Suite à sa rencontre avec le batteur burkinabè Moïse Ouattara, il a composé une musique basée sur des rythmes traditionnels du Burkina Faso et de l’Afrique de l’Ouest. Riffs jazz, groove et improvisations s’y mélangent pour créer une fusion transcontinentale chaleureuse et festive. Établi au Burkina Faso en 2013, le groupe a présenté son premier album Freedom From The Known en 2014 et 2015 en Afrique et en Europe, bien accueilli par la presse, le grand public et les professionnels. Le projet a ainsi reçu le Prix du Jury SIMA 2014 au Salon International de la Musique Africaine à Dakar en novembre 2014 et a été nominé aux Octaves de la Musique 2015 en Belgique.
Le groupe a présenté en 2017 son second album Beyond The Grid, également chaleureusement accueilli. En 2018, le groupe a sorti son premier clip sur la chanson Kélé Magni. Il a de nouveau été nominé aux Octaves de la Musique 2018 et a été Lauréat des Sabam Awards 2018 dans la catégorie Musiques du Monde.
Bien qu’on puisse entendre dans les compositions de claires influences du père de l’Afro Beat Fela Kuti, de Steve Coleman, de Manu Dibango ou encore d’Aka Moon, une identité très originale ressort de ce mélange de musiciens de jazz émergents d’Afrique et d’Europe. Avec une section rythmique burkinabè et des souffleurs belges, Afrikän Protoköl propose un spectacle coloré et dynamique ; une musique originale et universelle.
